The Baptismal Font

The font bowl was a glass casting commissioned locally for this project. Cast into the glass is the image of three streams flowing into a pool.  Around the rim of the bowl is etched the words from Revelation "The lamb shall lead them to springs of living waters".

Four scenes are depicted in wood on the baptismal font, each having to do with the way God uses water as a sign and symbol to save and redeem us. These four scenes rest beneath the baptismal font through which God's people enter the kingdom and receive God's promises.

The Flood

God's people and the creatures of the earth are saved from judgment and destruction by the same waters that covered the earth to cleanse it. The waters carry the ark to safety and the promises of new life God offers to the world. Noah is pointing to the dove, which holds in its beak the fresh twig, as a sign of dry land. The birds frolic over the water in the evening as the moon appears and the rainbow seals God's promise never again to destroy the earth by flood.

The Exodus

God's people are delivered from Egypt and saved by passing through the waters, which at the same time destroy the enemies of God. On the Egyptian side of the waters they were slaves without a future. On the other side of the waters they were "free to be people of God". As Moses directs God's people through the waters of the Red Sea, so Jesus directs us through the baptismal water and points the way to salvation. In, above and through it all, God's strong hand and mighty providence make deliverance possible.

The Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd leads His sheep to living waters that well up to eternal life. These living waters come from the "mountain of God" whose glory is hidden from us except as it is shown to us in Jesus. Only Jesus cares enough and is able to lead us to these waters.

The Flood

The Baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan

The prophet John in the river Jordan baptizes Jesus. In this action Jesus shows us the way by which we must all enter the Kingdom of God. The Spirit's dove is hovering close by over Jesus, reminding us of how close the Spirit comes to us in our baptisms. The voice of God, depicted by the rays from heaven, voices God's love and approval of His son. In the background lies a small town, nestled in the hills
