About the Artist/Woodcarver

W.F. (Bill) Judt has been carving for twenty-five years, starting with an adult night school course offered by the Winnipeg School Board in 1975.

Mostly self-taught, he carved professionally in the relative isolation of northern Alberta for the past 18 years before moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with his wife and two sons. There he maintains his home-based carving studio.

His style of carving is quite different from that of carvers elsewhere. He specializes in relief carving (carving pictures in wood) which he does on panels that are 2" thick or less. Almost all of his carvings are commissioned by private families, businesses, corporations, churches and the like.

Bill has taught workshops through the Alberta Rocky Mountain Carving Seminar, an annual event hosted by Red Deer College"s Summer Series program. He teaches weekly adult carving classes out of his home-based carving studio.

The artist is heavily involved in promoting woodcarving on the internet. He owns and operates the Woodcarver Mailing List, a large online community of carvers from around the world. Until recently he published the bi-monthly online magazine called the "WWWoodcarver E-zine". His was the first wood carving web site on the internet at www.wwwoodcarver.com

He recently authored his second book "Relief Carving: Patterns, Tips and Techniques", published by Fox Chapel Books. His first book, a best seller among carvers, is titled "Relief Carving Treasury".

Bill is an ordained Lutheran pastor, and a graduate from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon. He pastored a two-point parish in the Peace River area of Alberta before turning to full time carving in 1982. Carving is now his "ministry".
