the Processional Cross

While many churches use the crucifix, Mt. Olive chose the Ascending Lord as the theme for their processional cross.

The crucifix focuses on the power Jesus has over our sin, and of our reconciliation with God through Jesus. The Ascending Lord, however, points to the power Jesus has over the grave. It is a symbol of the hope we share in everlasting life, of the great commission given to all who follow Jesus, and of the outpouring of the Spirit (who was given 10 days after the ascension) to equip us for ministry.

Each time the Ascending Lord is lifted up before the congregation, the people are reminded of Jesus' promise to be "with us and in us" always "to the close of the age" of the church.

Carved from red Oak, the lines and shape of this relief sculpture are simple and clean, offering a contemporary image of the Ascending Lord.
