the Pulpit

Central to Christian Worship is the preaching of the Word. The pulpit carvings at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church draw attention to the first chapter of John's gospel, and the words "And the word became flesh, and dwelt among us" These words form the core of the Gospel message. What a powerful and unconventional way God chooses to be revealed. What a profound expression of love this revelation was and is.

The left set of panels illustrates the annunciation of the birth of the Savior to the Shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem. Frightened by the Angels, the shepherds nevertheless receive the news with amazement and joy, while the little town of Bethlehem slumbers in the hills beyond.

The right set of panels depicts Jesus preaching His "sermon on the mount" as people, young and old, gather around to hear Him teach about the kingdom of God. They are gathered high up on the hills overlooking the Sea of Galilee. In the sky, the hot summer sun descends to the horizon.  We are reminded that it was "through words and miracles" that Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God.

Across the base of the pulpit book rest is carved the text "I am not ashamed of the gospel". It is intended to remind all who proclaim the gospel and preach the word that there is risk involved in bearing witness to Christ, but those who do it boldly and without shame will be blessed for the task.

Two crosses flank the entrance to the pulpit. They are to remind us that we preach "Christ crucified" and not the "theology of glory". However, the crosses are empty to show that suffering is not the "end" but the "means" by which God convinces us all of His love for us. As the cross is empty, so are the graves of all who die in Jesus, for nothing, not even death will separate us from the love of God through Jesus our Lord.
We "take up our crosses and follow Jesus" not to earn God's favour, but utilizing and comprehending suffering as a powerful means by which God's love is proclaimed through us to others.
